At the simplest level, someone who professes to be a Christian should know and believe the Bible. It is a wealth of wisdom and information to lead a life pleasing to God. People can dig into it for many years and continue to grow spiritually.
Since professing Christians who are liberal with the text intellectualize, twist, demean Scripture, and even malign those of us who believe what it says about creation and the Genesis Flood, I believe those folks are pretty much deists at heart. Indeed, they would welcome Charles Darwin in their pulpits if it were possible. Also, those who believe in long ages and millions of years are not much better, finding excuses to deny the global Genesis Flood.
There are also people who take a liberal view of the Bible. They do not really believe it means what it says, or that what it says is not supposed to be there. Theistic evolutionists ("evolutionary creationists") perform massive eisegesis to deny the recent creation of Adam and Eve.

If you're an old earther or TE, I've got some bad news for you, Sunshine. The Bible clearly teaches that Adam and Eve were literal people, and this fact is affirmed throughout. Do you want to explain to Jesus why you called him a liar? (The same statements apply to the Flood — plain teaching and affirmed.) Worse for Adam deniers is that, disavow as much as they want, science points to a literal Adam and Eve.
An increasing number of professing evangelical scholars and leaders doubt or deny some or all of the details about Adam in Genesis. They do so because they believe that science has proven overwhelmingly that we are related to the apes through millions of years of evolution. But is this so? And does it matter?
