Greater Impact — Lincoln or Darwin

Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln had a birth date in common, but similarities between the two men are rather sparse. Obviously they lived in different countries. Darwin was highfalutin but Lincoln was born in poverty and had to work his way up. A similarity between them is that both hard to market themselves, Darwin with influential friends and knowing how to sell his ideas , Lincoln was in the Illinois state legislature, then the House of Representatives, ultimately President. Very different personalities and beliefs, each had a lasting impact on society. On this fifteenth annual Question Evolution Day , it is important to contrast the influence each of them had. Since the stories of evolution are very old, someone would have come up with an allegedly scientific version. Indeed, we almost had Wallacism instead of Darwinism . There is compelling evidence that near the end of his life, Abe became a Christian; his beliefs underscored his policies. Charlie's religious beliefs are de...

Professing Christians have done bad Things

A search of history, or even personal memories, will reveal that there are people who claim to be Christians who act in an unchristlike manner. That is, they "talk the talk" but may not "walk the walk". Some unbelievers say that churches are full of hypocrites. (So are grocery stores.) Well, it has been said that churches are hospitals for sinners, not museums for saints. Although all of us who profess to follow Jesus display failings, we are human, after all. This does not negate the truth of Christianity in the least. Inquisition Scene / Francisco Goya (1819) It is a fact that atheists lie. A lot. Some have falsely claimed that "religion" is the cause of most wars . Other things in history they bring up include the Crusades, the Salem Witch Trials, the Spanish Inquisition — "I didn't expect the —" Stop that. Indeed, when atheists bring such things up, they tend to misrepresent the numbers of deaths more often than not. Centuries ago, the ...

Humanism is Atheistic and Inhuman

The word humanist  has been used in different ways, usually in a benevolent way. People have stated that they are humanists because they believe in the decency and beauty of humanity. Indeed, humanists can be involved in humanitarian relief efforts. Humanism is religious in nature, and that has a very dark side. These humanists believe that they have no need for God, who probably does not even exist — but they hate him anyway. Many times atheists acquire political power and it becomes disastrous for all concerned. Strangely, they think they are good without God. This graphic about atheist dictators has had a great deal of traction since I made it in 2010 The French Revolution began with legitimate complaints about the monarchy, but turned into the atheistic Reign of Terror with thousands of murders. After Charles Darwin came on the scene, evolution became a major part of the religion of secular humanism. Instead of peace, tolerance, prosperity, and all that good stuff, they bring t...

Interracial Marriage and the Bible

Decades ago, I remember my parents speaking in a disapproving manner about a marriage between black and white people. There was something about staying with "their own kind" because the couple would trouble from both sides. Nowadays, mixed marriages are common, but they still may receive some flak. For millennia, people have had negativity toward different groups due to pigment, culture, and other things. Racism sounded scientific because of Darwinism and it grew tremendously because of it. Biblically, God created only one race  — and science is catching up with the Bible. Bible and wedding rings, Pexels / Alexander Mass Just a side note here. I am writing this on what would have been our twentieth wedding anniversary if my wife had not died just over two years ago. Remember the evolution story about Neanderthals? Stupid brutes that were a link between humans and apelike creatures — except that the evidence shows they were fully human , and they interbred with modern humans. ...

Science May Know How, But Not Why

Parents of small children dread the "Why?" stage, as it can continue for quite a while. The first question is asked, and when the answer is given, "Why?" is next. Repeat ad nauseum . Sometimes it seems that the child does not really want to know because it is just a game. Centuries ago, I mentioned to someone that science cannot answer why something happens. I was told that science does know why. Well, why is the sky blue? The answer involves light waves, but that is how . Tell me why  the laws of physics exist. Microscope, Pixabay / Konstantin Kolosov Secular scientists presuppose naturalism. That is, everything happens without the influence of God or spirits. While it is good for scientists to look for natural explanations for phenomena and not simply say, "God did it" without investigating further, secularists tend to essentially use, "Evolution did it" or similar. It is folly for Christians (including scientists who are believers) to leave G...

All is Vanity under the Sun

When Solomon became king in place of his father David, God spoke to him and asked what he could do for him. He asked for wisdom. The Lord was pleased, giving him the wisdom and other rewards, and his wisdom became famous. Indeed, even today, people refer to the "wisdom of Solomon." People wonder about the meaning of life and why we are here in the first place. Some even seek out philosophers and gurus for answers, only to come away unsatisfied. Solomon did some investigation and reached a conclusion. Traffic under the sun on Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge, Unsplash / Cowboy Bob Sorensen The book of Ecclesiastes has some allusions to creation in Genesis. It can also seem depressing, but that is because Solly was taking secular views and experiencing things that people seek out for pleasure and learning. He shows why humanistic thinking and leaving God out of our lives is vanity. Of all the books in the Old Testament, one of the most mysterious and least understood must surely be E...

No, Humans are not Animals

As I was leaving town, riding east out Folly Road, I came across with Rusty Swingset, foreman of the Darwin Ranch up near Deception Pass. He was with Jacqueline Hyde (who was not really herself that day). We met near Stinking Lake. It was a nice day so we stopped and made chin music for a spell. Sometimes Rusty can be hard to like, and he was a mite on the prod that day. I mentioned having seen a bounty hunter bringing in a bad guy. This jasper was a real animal, and I said so. Tiger, Pixabay / Felix Schweitz   (I like tigers) "Was it Randall that brought in that guy?" asked Swingset. "Nope, it was a different fellow. Didn't hear his name," I replied. "You said the baddie's an animal. Well, Charles Darwin was right, we're all animals." "Not true," I said. Rusty squinted at me and adjusted his hat while Jacqueline looked bored. "Study on this. We're warm blooded, females give milk, breathe air, eat, and all sorts of things lik...
