Backward Blessings?

by Cowboy Bob Sorensen

If someone says that becoming a Christian means life will be a happy road all the time, they are out of touch with reality. We have struggles like everybody else. (Christians who stand for the truth of God's Word often have additional problems.) There are times when inconveniences may actually be God at work on our behalf.

There is a story circulating about a conversation between someone and God. Why did God allow such an annoying day to happen? Those annoyances were caused by him, but the person did not know it.

Tires, Pixnio / Bicanski
After suffering through the annoyance of a slow tire leak, I took the car to my wife's favorite service center. It took a while and cost over fifty simoleons. Well, I am set up to go to an oral surgeon at Westchester Medical Center. It will be quick outpatient surgery, but under general anesthetic. That causes serious problems with transportation, but at least the leak problem is solved.

It came back a few days later.

I returned to the service place and they fixed the patch. However, the man who worked on it was called over, and he told me it had serious dry rot. They all needed replacing. Besides, the tires were about nine years old. It will cost me over six hunnert smackers. I asked if I would be all right driving ninety minutes each way for surgery prep and then the surgery, and he said I should take care of the tires soon. Well, I certainly don't want to have one or more fall apart on a busy dangerous road, so I signed up.

It is interesting that I had to close out my late wife's estate account and produce a document to the Surrogate Court. That account was used for outstanding bills and expenses. What was left came to me. There is enough to pay for the tires and alignment on the car — which was originally hers.

These backward blessings are something I can see happening, but they were unexpected. Many times, I have thought of that conversational story linked above (just before the picture, if you missed it). Something goes wrong and I wonder why, my day was all right until then.

Hindrances or apparent problems could be a part of God's design. Mayhaps he sent an angel to delay me, and I may never know that my life was saved just then. That's just a f'rinstance. Still, he is working and we don't always know what is happening. We need to trust in his care and have faith.

By the way, I had already requested and been approved for time off from the workplace on the day of the surgery and the day after. Interesting.
