If you study on it, languages can be tricky things. Using the wrong word, or using the right word but being misunderstood, can cause a passel of confusion. Translating a language is challenging enough, but factor in different cultures from long ago and the situation becomes rather intricate. (Read some of the classic literature from the 18th and 19th centuries and you'll see that the eloquent prose from days gone by stands in stark contrast to much of what is available today.)
