So You Want to be an Apologist?

by Cowboy Bob Sorensen  This is not a short article, as I was unwilling to derail the train of thought by serializing it. In a classic sketch on Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Mr. Anchovy visited the Vocational Guidance Counsellor, seeking assistance on leaving Chartered Accountancy. Mr. Anchovy boldly proclaimed that he wanted to become a lion tamer!   When the counselor asked about his qualifications, the reply was, “I’ve got a hat…A hat with 'lion tamer' on it … And it lights up saying 'lion tamer' in great big neon letters, so that you can tame them after dark when they're less stroppy.” Worse, Mr. Anchovy did not even know what a lion was — he was confusing lions with anteaters. There are people who want to go into apologetics but only have a superficial idea of what is involved. They have watched videos where people like William Lane Craig show atheists that their philosophy is inconsistent, read some books by C.S. Lewis and other philosophers, hear

Apologetics — Your Weapons, Warfare and Motives

This is a guest post from "Miss Sword". She wanted me to run it on one of my Weblogs. Her preference is the King James Version, so I had to put "KVJ" after each link so the default RefTagger version did not pop up. We both hope that you find it encouraging and edifying.  —Cowboy Bob Apologetics is the branch of Christianity that deals with the defense and establishment of the Christian faith. — CARM As much as I love apologetics, I think there is a danger in it and all Christians should beware. 1 Cor. 1:20-21 KJV reminds us that all the wisdom of this world cannot help us to know God (see also 1 Cor. 3.19-20 KJV ). Our primary weapon should be the two-edged Sword that pierces to the very soul, spirit, and heart of man (Heb. 4.12 KJV). It is what the Lord Himself used when Satan came to tempt Him in Luke 4. The Bible is the Word of God (2 Tim. 3:16 KJV). It is eternal (1 Peter 1:25 KJV, Psalm 119:89 KJV). It is "quick" (Heb

Surveying the Cross

Christians need to focus on the meaning of the cross. This is "Good Friday", which seems a misnomer. It was good for us, but bad for Jesus, it seems. But hang on, Sunday's coming! On the day often called Good Friday many Christians will commemorate the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The Creator put on human flesh and died a horrific death on the Cross. Rather than worshiping Him as their Creator and God, most people rejected Him and sentenced Him to death. How could the day associated with mankind’s heinous act possibly be called good? The answer to this question is found in the purpose for Christ’s death. Jesus said that He “"did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many"” (Matthew 20:28). Since we have all sinned against the infinitely holy God, we deserve to pay the price for our rebellion—death (Romans 3:23). But praise God for His mercy and grace! Rather than condemning us for our sin, the Bible tells us that God so loved the
